Educator 1: Maya, you and Crystal can pick a carrot, if you like, but make sure it’s a really big one. Just a second. I think there’s a big one up here, is there?
Maya: This is big.
Educator 1: Oh, look at this one, Crystal.
Crystal: Whoa!
Educator 1: Look at that. OK, just move back so we can see how big it is. Do you think that one would be a big carrot yet?
Maya: Yeah.
Educator 1: Alright. Well, can you hold it together?
Maya: Yeah.
Educator 1: Crystal, do you want...
Crystal: I want one too.
Educator 1: Alright, well, you pull that one out and Maya can pull this one.
Maya: That one's not big enough.
Educator 1: It’s not big enough? What about this one Crystal’s got?
Maya: Oh, let’s see, let’s see, let’s see.
Child [from off-screen]: It’s hard.
Educator 1 [from off-screen]: Hard. Can you do it?

Other children in the area play independently. The two girls run toward a vegetable garden, passing a scarecrow in a flowered hat. Crystal: That is a big carrot.
Educator 1: It’s a big carrot. Do you want to take that home tonight?
Crystal: Yeah.
Educator 1: Look at that. Do you think you can cook it for dinner? Want to take it home for Mum?
Maya: But first you need to wash it.
Educator 1: We do need to wash it first. Of course we do. Are there any snow peas? No snow peas.

Maya: Can I?
Educator 1: Yep. Can you water some of the carrots, please? Because they need a lot of water because it was very hot yesterday. OK, I’ll hold your carrots. We’ll put those over here.
Visual description: The educator moves to the other side of the garden area to get a large green bucket sitting on top of a barbeque grill. Educator 1: It’s white.
Educator 1: What is it, darling, Abi?
Educator 1: It’s gone white.

Crystal: And that.
Educator 1: How many can we see? How many broccoli are there?
Maya: One, two, three.
Educator 1 [from off-screen]: Three broccoli. That’s fantastic.
Crystal: What’s that one?
Educator 1: That’s the marigold. Remember what the marigold does?
Maya: It keeps all the bugs away from the garden!
Educator 1: That's right. Now, we’ve got some eggshells for our garden too. What does the eggshell do?

Maya: What is it?
Educator 1: It's a cricket.
Maya: [Gasps] A cricket?
Educator 1: It’s a cricket on our spinach. Can you see this, Abi?
Abi: A cricket?
Educator 1: There’s a cricket on our spinach. It must like spinach, do you think? He could be like Popeye.
Maya: He’s going like this.
Educator 1: Yeah, I know. Do you think he's going to eat it?
Maya: Yeah.
Visual description: Maya, Crystal and the educator move along the garden bed, stopping at the spinach plants. The educator crouches and pulls back a spinach leaf, revealing a large brown cricket to Crystal. The educator sits on the wall and motions to Maya and Abi to join them. Maya: Oh! Yucky, yucky, yucky.
Educator 1: What’s that?
Maya: Yucky!
Educator 1: Oh, he’s beautiful. Look at his long legs. And can you see his eyes?
Maya: Cutie!
Educator 1: He is cute, isn't he?
Maya: Cutie, cutie.
Educator 1: But what we might do… we might put him somewhere else so he doesn’t eat our vegetables. Would that be OK?
Maya: Yes.
Educator 1: Let’s go find another spot in the garden.
Visual description: The educator carefully removes the cricket from the spinach and shows it to Crystal and Maya. She gently cradles the cricket in her hand and brings it closer to the children to study.
