00:06 – 00:33
Audio: [Ambient sounds of children playing in the outdoor area of the service while the pots and pans clang and thud.]
Educator: Is it a bit loud, is it, Jaye? It’s not as loud as the drumbeat man yesterday. He was very loud, wasn’t he?
Visual description: In the outdoor area of a children’s education and care service, a range of pots and pans cover a bench and hang from a wooden stand creating a music and sound station. A boy hits upturned dishes and hanging pans with two wooden sticks while a girl stands nearby with her fingers in her ears. An educator walks by with another boy and asks Jaye if the sound is too loud.
00:34 – 00:54
Audio: [Ambient sounds of children talking and playing in the outdoor area while the sound of the pots and pans continue to clang.]
Visual description: The boy hits a hanging pot lightly with a small stick, then bangs dishes on the bench. Jaye uses a thin metal rod to hit a suspended metal tube. As the boy bangs on the pots on the table then the pans on the wooden stand, Jaye slides the thin metal rod through the suspended metal tube.
00:55 – 01:24
Audio: [As the pipes chime, the rod rattles and pots clang, Jaye and the boy laugh and giggle.]
Boy: Does it fit through? Put it through. Put it through.
Jaye: It fits.
Boy: That’s a nice sound, isn’t it?
Visual description: Jaye drops the rod through the pipe again. The boy holds the rod steady so she can drop it through a third time. As Jaye rattles the thin metal rod in a pan suspended from the wooden stand, the boy hits the bottom of the pan a number of times to make the rod jump.
01:25 – 01:34
Audio: [Ambient sounds of children talking and playing in the outdoor area while the sound of the pots and pans continue to clang.]
Jaye: How about in the strainer? Ooh. Whoops.
Visual description: Jaye moves on to another dish to her left and tries to make the thin metal rod jump inside it but it falls. She retrieves the rod while the boy drums on the table with wooden sticks.
01:35 – 01:38
Audio: [Ambient sounds of children talking and playing in the outdoor area while the sound of the pots and pans continue to clang.]
Jaye: Hey, this is good for conducting.
Visual description: Jaye waves the thin metal rod in the air like an orchestra conductor while the boy taps his wooden sticks together.
01:39 – 01:51
Audio: [Ambient sounds of children talking and playing in the outdoor area while the sound of the pots, pans and sticks continue to clang and bang.]
Visual description: Using wooden sticks, the boy bangs some of the pots and trays on the bench. With the thin metal rod, Jaye taps a dangling metal utensil then a plastic bottle filled with beans.
01:52 – 02:12
Audio: [Ambient sounds of children talking and playing in the outdoor area while the sound of the pots, pans and sticks continue to clang and bang.]
Educator: Thomas, Francis wants to talk into the microphone. Can we move your drums just over that way a bit so he can stand here to talk into the microphone? Thank you. There you go.
Visual description: An educator and two other boys join Jaye and the first boy at the music and sound station. One boy holds onto a long, green plastic pipe positioned on the ground near the bench. The pipe, which is the microphone at the sound station, extends above the percussion bench. The educator crouches down to speak to Thomas, the boy who has been playing music with Jaye. She moves the drums to clear some space for Francis then walks away to allow the children to continue their play.
02:13 – 02:36
Audio: [Ambient sounds of children talking and playing in the outdoor area while the sound of the pots, pans and sticks continue to clang and bang.]
Visual description: Francis stands before the pipe with a small plank held across his middle like a guitarist in front of a microphone. Francis turns to Jaye, who is standing beside him and gives Francis a smile and a nod. Thomas begins drumming again and Francis turns to watch him. Thomas hits a range of dishes as the other boy walks around the bench then walks away to join the other children in the outdoor area.
