Video transcript – Exploring the world through the eye of a camera

This video shows a child and an educator exploring a camera. The role of the educator in supporting the child’s engagement through play is highlighted, as well as how these interactions are used to inform reflective practice.

Boy: That’s Thomas.
Educator: How do you know that?
Boy: Because I know it.
Educator: Are you going to take a picture of Thomas?
Boy: Yeah.
Visual description: An educator and two young boys are in the outdoor area of the service. The educator is crouching down with a small boy named Thomas. A slightly older boy stands in front of the educator holding a DSLR camera. The older boy uses the camera to take a photo of Thomas.

Educator: Would you like to show Thomas the picture you took? 
Boy: Yes.
Educator: Show Thomas his picture. Look, Thomas, it’s a picture of your shirt. He didn’t get a picture of your head. See? He took a picture of your shirt. It’s the same as on here. 
Boy: I want to take a picture of his head. 
Visual description: The boy points to the camera display screen. The educator takes the camera and looks for the photo. The boy shows Thomas the photo as the educator points to the screen then to Thomas’ shirt.

Audio: [Sounds of children talking and playing in the outdoor area.]
Educator: How about when you hold the camera…
Boy: Yes?
Educator: Oops. Can you see? Stand back and see if you can see Thomas’ picture in there. Can you see Thomas’ face?
Boy: Yeah.
Educator: When you see Thomas’ face, then you can press the button.
Boy: I can see him!
Educator: Can you see it?
Boy: Yes.
Educator: Now you can press the button. ‘Cause what you see in the front is going to be on there. 
Visual description: The boy raises the camera up to the peak of his cap and points the lens down at Thomas’ face. The educator gently guides the camera back down to chest level and guides the boy back a few steps. The educator shows the boy how to look at the photo on the camera display screen at the back of the camera.

Educator: Shall we have a look? 
Boy: I want to take a picture of that.
Educator: OK.
Visual description: The educator shows the boy how to look at the camera display screen. The boy points the camera down to the grass and then at a tennis totem pole.

Audio: [Sounds of children talking and playing in the outdoor area and camera beeps.]
Educator: I’ll move the button and then you can tell me if you see it. Can you see it? There.
Chase: OK.
Educator: When we take a picture, Chase, it needs to be on that red button there. What can you see through the camera?
Chase: I can see me. 
Educator: You can see you? 
Chase: Yes. 
Educator: Can you see anything else?
Chase: I can see Leslie in a car. 
Educator: You can see Leslie in a car? Let me see.
Visual description: Chase points the camera at Thomas. The educator turns the camera lens and shows Chase how to press the camera shutter. Chase points the camera at the tennis totem pole and looks through the viewfinder. Chase shows the educator the camera display screen.

Audio: [Sounds of children talking and playing in the outdoor area and camera shutter sounds and beeps.]
Educator: Oh, hang on, maybe our batteries have gone flat. 
Chase: Yay.
Educator: There we go. 
Educator: What can you see? 
Chase: I’ve taken a picture of this. 
Educator: I can see Thomas’ head now. 
Chase: Yes.
Educator: What colour’s his hair?
Chase: Uh…silver. 
Visual description: The educator turns the camera to check the screen, pressing the buttons to check the battery. Chase presses the shutter and takes a photo of the tennis pole. The educator holds the camera and looks at the photos with Chase and Thomas.

Audio: [Sounds of children talking and playing in the outdoor area.]
Thomas: Out there. 
Educator: Over there? What’s over there, Thomas?
Educator: Would you like to take a picture over there?
Visual description: Thomas points to something off screen. Chase points the camera at the garden beds in the opposite direction.

02:24 – 02:30
Audio: [Sounds of children talking and playing in the outdoor area as the wind blows in the background.]
Chase: One red. 
Educator: Good boy. Maybe you can take a picture and then you can send it to Dad on the computer when Dad’s in Broome.
Chase: Yeah.
Visual description: The educator and Chase are now in a different part of the outdoor area. As they crouch at a raised garden bed, they touch and point to the plants. Chase is wearing the camera around his neck.

02:31 – 02:47
Audio: [Sounds of children talking and playing in the outdoor area as the wind blows in the background.]
Educator: Did you get one? Can I have a look? 
Educator: Oh, when you hold it, hold the button nice and hard so you can get the picture. 
Visual description: Chase bends down over the garden bed and looks at the plants through the camera viewfinder. The educator checks the camera and shows Chase the shutter button then moves out of frame. 

02:48 – 03:12
Audio: [Sounds of children talking and playing in the outdoor area as the wind blows in the background.]
Educator: Did it make a click noise?
Chase: It made a click noise. I’ll take a picture of it. 
Educator: Ok. I’ll hop out of the way. 
Educator: Whoopsy! Don’t fall in the garden. I’ll have to take a picture of you sitting in the garden otherwise. 
Visual description: Chase points the camera down at the garden bed and presses the button, then looks at the camera screen. The educator takes the camera and looks through the photos. Chase bends over the garden bed and tries again as the educator moves away. The camera pans out as Chase stumbles slightly into the garden bed and the educator stands on the left side of the frame.

Chase: I’m taking a picture of the fence. 
Educator: Ok. Is there a pattern on the fence?
Chase: I’ve taken a picture of the fence. 
Visual description: Chase turns around and walks to another garden bed. He points the camera at the cream steel panel fence behind him and then walks towards it. Chase takes a photo of the fence and then walks towards the educator. 

03:29 – 04:09
Audio: [Ambient sounds of children talking and playing inside the service.]
Chase: One?
Educator: Yes, please. Oops. Alright, we’ve got to leave it plugged in. Alright. This is the cord that we put to the camera. 
Chase: Yes.
Educator: Oh, hang on, pull the chair in. Up we go. 
Educator: Here, if we put the cord in the camera…
Chase: Yes?
Educator: Do you think we can make the big picture come up on to the computer?
Chase: Yes.
Educator: Ok. Because if it’s a big picture, we can show all your friends. 
Chase: Yeah.
Visual description: Inside the service at a workstation, the educator shows Chase how to transfer the images from the camera onto the computer. The educator places Chase on her lap in front of the computer. The educator plugs a cable into the camera and they wait for the images to load on the screen.

Audio: [Ambient sounds of children talking and playing in another room, followed by the prominent sound of children and educators singing to a music track.]
Chase: That’s Stacey laying on Courtney.
Educator: They’re laying on Courtney?
Chase: Yeah.
Educator: Oh. 
Educator: Does that look like some of the pictures you took? 
Chase: No.
Educator: Oh! Whose is that tummy?
Chase: Mine.
[Chase laughs].
Chase: That’s me. 
Educator: That’s you?
Chase: Yeah, getting married. 
Educator: What were you doing? Oh, you got married?
Chase: Yeah.
Educator: Who did you marry? 
Visual description: Chase points to the computer screen at an image. The educator clicks through various images of children, some of them in dress ups. One image shows Chase’s stomach, another image shows him standing with a girl.

Educator 1: What did you take a picture of?
Chase: Of the sky.
Educator 1: The sky.
Educators 2 and 3: Wow. 
Educator 1: And then, once you took the pictures on the camera, what did we do?
Chase: Put them on the computer. 
Educator 1: We put them on the computer and printed them out. 
Educator 2: Wow. 
Educator 1: Would you like to show the children the pictures and tell them about your pictures?
Chase: Yeah.
Visual description: A group of children sit on the floor in a corner area of a large room listening to Chase and two educators who are seated on either side of him. There are three other educators sitting with the group of children. Chase stands as he holds up the image print outs for the group.

Educator 2: What’s in this picture?
Chase: A ball.
Educator 2: A ball?
Educator 1: Do you like those pictures, Madison?
Educator 2: Wow, that’s a great picture.
Chase: And Thomas’ head.
Educator 2: But what’s this one here? I can see something here. What’s this one here, do you think?
Chase: Thomas holding a ball.
Educator 2: Is it Thomas holding a ball? What kind of ball was that? I haven’t seen that kind of ball before.
Chase:  That was a tennis one. 
Educator 2: A tennis one. Wow. 
Visual description: Another educator walks into the room holding the hand of a young boy as she carries a young girl. The children and educator sit on the floor to join the group as they listen to Chase and the other educators. 

05:45 – 06:24
Audio: [Ambient sounds of children talking and playing inside the service as a young child coos nearby.]
Educator 1 [to the group]: Do you know what else Chase is going to do with the pictures? 
Educator 1 [to Chase]: What else are you going to do with the pictures, Chase?
Chase: Take a photo.
Educator 1: You took a photo, we put them all on the computer and where are you going to send them?
Chase: To Daddy at Broome. 
Educator 2: To Daddy at Broome. 
Educator 1: Yes, his Daddy’s working at Broome for two months and we won’t see him for a long time. So, Chase is going to send his photos on the computer to Daddy’s computer in Broome.
Chase: Not these.
Abdullah: He already…he showed me these papers.
Educator 1: Yes, he printed these ones out on the paper so that you can have a look at them, Abdullah. And then he’s going to send the ones that are on the computer to his Daddy in Broome.
Visual description: In a closer shot, Chase stands between the two seated educators in front of a small group while holding a sheet of paper featuring four images. The educator talks to the group and Abdullah about Chase’s images.

Audio: [Ambient sounds of children talking and playing inside the service as an educator reads a story.]
Educator [from off-screen]: “Little bear tried and tried to go to sleep but he couldn’t.”
Educator 1: What are we doing today? What does that say?
Chase: [mumbles]
Educator 1: Oh. Can I write something as well? 
Visual description: Chase stands at a notice board writing on a ‘Curriculum Planning Sheet’ pinned under the heading, ‘Thursday’. Using a pen, Chase neatly writes under the ‘Experience’ column of the sheet. Educator 1 approaches and crouches next to Chase to observe him writing. Chase points to his writing with the pen before passing it to Educator 1.
