- Ask each other, 'Are you okay?'
Winter can be a tough time for many people. For the Australian children’s education and care sector, the struggle is intensified by several factors that make this season particularly challenging. Winter brings illness, inclement weather and shorter days that affect the health and wellbeing of educators and children. All these elements can contribute to educator burnout in a sector that continues to struggle with staff shortages and a reduced sense of vitality.
Wellbeing is a crucial part of building an educator's sense of belonging, being and becoming. Wellbeing incorporates both physical and psychological aspects, and requires a focus on building resilience, trust and a sense of purpose. When service providers prioritise mental health and wellbeing, they build a strong and sustainable team that improves outcomes for all stakeholders.
For example, when educators are empowered to manage expectations of workload and actively contribute to operational decision making for quality improvement, they build a sense of autonomy, purpose and belonging. This leads to a positive workplace culture.
This year’s R U OK? Day is on 12 September. This national day of action highlights the importance of meaningful conversations that focus on mental health and wellbeing. While the initiative falls on one day, we are encouraged to ask the question, 'R U OK?' throughout the year. It is important to check in with staff and encourage service-wide action to ensure the wellbeing of educators, service leaders, children and families.
So, take some time to reflect on your workplace culture and wellbeing, and most importantly, ask each other, 'Are you okay?'
